PDF watermark remover: what actually works in 2026

Canva Pro is the best PDF watermark remover in our 2026 ranking: it imports the PDF, Magic Eraser clears the stamp, and it exports a clean PDF in one pass, rating 8.9/10 on our criteria for document work. For scanned PDFs, Photoshop’s Generative Fill is built to rebuild the page image under a tiled mark. But the right tool depends on where the mark lives: a DRAFT stamp in the text layer is best removed in the source document, not in a PDF tool at all.

Most pages ranking for this query list a dozen converters that flatten your document and mangle the text. This page rates the two jobs that matter, a text-layer stamp and a scanned page with a tiled mark, and only recommends what keeps the document usable after the removal, text selection included.

Canva Pro: best PDF watermark remover overall

If the watermark comes from Canva, upgrading is cleaner and cheaper than any removal tool.

Canva Pro handles the whole job inside one editor. It imports a PDF with the layout converted to editable pages, Magic Eraser removes a centred DRAFT stamp with a brush stroke, and the export comes back as a PDF. On a scanned page it treats the tiled mark like any object in a photo, and users report slight softness where the mark crosses body text.

The honest caveat: Canva converts pages on import, so a heavily formatted contract can shift, and text embedded in a scan stays an image. For a flyer, a menu, a one-page proposal, it is the fastest clean route we know of; check the export before sending anything legal. The 30-day trial covers a one-off document without paying.

  • Clears the Canva watermark at the source: premium assets export clean, permanently
  • Magic Eraser clears objects and stamps from photos inside the same editor
  • Bulk Create applies a brand watermark across hundreds of designs
  • Only fixes Canva watermarks, no help on third-party files
  • Team seats add up fast
Rank 2.

Photoshop Generative Fill: best for scanned PDF pages

The highest ceiling on still images by a wide margin, if you already know Photoshop.

Photoshop treats a PDF page as an image, which is exactly right for scans. It rasterises the page at the resolution you choose, 300 dpi for a document scan, Generative Fill rebuilds the paper texture under a tiled TRIAL mark, and the page is re-exported clean, including where the stamp crosses signatures, which is the job a one-tap eraser smudges.

The workflow is the price: page by page, no text layer preserved, and there is no free tier. Use it when the document is a scan anyway, or when the mark crosses detail that a one-tap eraser smudges. The Photoshop review covers its removal modes in depth.

  • Generative Fill reconstructs detail no dedicated remover matches
  • Full manual control when the AI guess is wrong
  • Actions and batch scripts automate repeat jobs properly
  • Steep learning curve for a one-off removal
  • No video watermark removal in Photoshop itself

How to choose a PDF watermark remover

Where a PDF watermark lives: text layer or page image

Open the file and try to select the mark like text. If you can, it is an object in the layout; if not, it is baked into the page image.

Every PDF watermark is one of two things. Either it is an object the PDF describes, a semi-transparent text or image element drawn over each page, the classic DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL stamp. Or it is baked into the page itself, which is what happens when a marked document is scanned, screenshotted or flattened on export.

The ten-second diagnosis decides your route: try to select the watermark with the text cursor. Selectable or highlightable means object, and an editor can delete it cleanly. Not selectable means image, and you need pixel reconstruction, the same job as removing a mark from a photo.

Removing a DRAFT stamp from a PDF you own

The cleanest fix is upstream: delete the stamp in the source document and export the PDF again.

An object watermark was put there by software, usually the DRAFT stamp your own word processor or a trial PDF printer added. If you have the source file, remove it there, in Word under Design, then Watermark, then Remove, or by deleting the header element in Google Docs, and re-export. The result is perfect because nothing is reconstructed.

Without the source, a PDF editor that lists page objects can delete the stamp element directly, keeping the text layer selectable. That is the one job where a dedicated PDF editor beats everything in our ranking; the tools above earn their place on the cases an object delete cannot fix.

Watermarks on scanned PDF pages

A scanned mark is a photo problem wearing a PDF extension. Image tools win, and the text layer is already gone.

Once a marked page has been scanned, the watermark and the text share the same layer of pixels, and no PDF editor can separate them. The working route is the one Photoshop documents: rasterise the page, reconstruct the area under the mark, re-export, then run OCR if you need selectable text back.

Quality is decided by resolution: at 300 dpi the reconstruction has room to rebuild paper texture, while a 96 dpi screenshot leaves it nothing to work with. For a single simple page, an online remover on a page screenshot gets you a clean image fast; it just will not be a real PDF until you re-assemble it.

Adding a watermark to a PDF instead

For stamping your own documents, Watermarkly batches PDFs in the browser without uploading them.

The mirror job, branding or protecting your own PDFs, has better tooling than removal does. Watermarkly applies text or logo marks across batches of PDFs and processes files in the browser without uploading them to a server, which matters for contracts.

Placement rules are the same as for photos: over content, not margins, at an opacity that survives reconstruction. The protect your work section covers watermark design that is actually worth having.

PDF watermark remover FAQ

How do I remove a watermark from a PDF?

First check where the mark lives: if you can select it like text, delete it in the source document or a PDF editor and keep a perfect file. If it is part of the page image, use Canva Pro for a quick clean pass or Photoshop for scans. Canva rates 8.9/10 on this job in our ranking.

How can I remove a PDF watermark for free?

If the source document is yours, removing the stamp there and re-exporting costs nothing and beats every tool. For a flattened mark, Canva’s 30-day Pro trial covers a one-off document, and a free online image remover can clean a screenshot of a simple page at reduced quality.

How do I remove a DRAFT watermark from a PDF?

DRAFT stamps are usually objects in the layout, added by Word or a PDF printer. In Word: Design, then Watermark, then Remove Watermark, and export the PDF again. Without the source file, delete the stamp object in a PDF editor; only reach for image tools if the page has been flattened or scanned.

Can I remove a watermark from a scanned PDF?

Yes, but it is image reconstruction, not PDF editing: the mark and the document share the same pixels. Photoshop’s Generative Fill is the tool built for it, working from a 300 dpi scan of the page. Expect to run OCR afterwards if you need selectable text.

Does removing a PDF watermark keep the text selectable?

Only the object-delete route does. Removing a stamp in the source document or deleting it as a page object leaves the text layer untouched. Canva and Photoshop work on the page as an image, so selectable text survives only where the original layer already existed and OCR can restore the rest.

Is it legal to remove a watermark from a PDF?

From your own documents, your organisation’s files, or output of software you licence, yes. Removing marks from paid or protected documents you do not own, stamped sample reports, licensed standards, paywalled papers, is exactly what those marks exist to prevent, and no tool here is for that.
