Star Watermark review: 8.5/10 on our five criteria

Star Watermark is the value pick of the protection side: a $19.95 one-time licence, no subscription, that batch-brands images and video through the same desktop queue. The tiling, rotation and blend-mode controls it documents go deeper than tools at three times the recurring cost, and users report mixed batches completing without settings drift. It rates 8.5/10.

The shape of the trade is old-school software: Windows and macOS only, sold as separate licences, everything offline, no cloud sync, templates that stay on one machine, and an interface to match. For a solo photographer or videographer branding exports on one computer, that reads as a feature list.

Star Watermark scores against the category average

8.5/10 overall, against 8.5 for the 9 removers we rate.

+0.1 avg 8.5

+1.1 avg 8.1

Batch at 9.2 is the second-best batch score in our ratings: one queue takes video and images together under the same template, and user reports of drift across long runs are rare. Value at 8.8 is what a $19.95 perpetual licence earns in a subscription market.

Ease at 8.0 is the honest tax: the interface predates modern conventions and the first template takes longer to build than in Watermarkly. Speed at 8.6 reflects local processing that depends on your own hardware, with no upload or server queue in the way.

What Star Watermark removes, job by job

The four jobs that decide the score, judged on the documented workflow and on what users report.

  1. One queue for video and images

The defining feature: a mixed batch of clips and photos takes the same watermark template through one queue, and no other tool in this comparison does that at all. The documentation covers position and opacity per output resolution, and users publishing both formats report the marks landing where the template says.

For a creator who publishes both formats, this single queue replaces two workflows, and it is the reason Star Watermark holds its slot in the batch ranking.

  2. Deep control over the mark itself

Tiling spacing, rotation, per-mark blend modes and shadow control go beyond what Watermarkly exposes, and they matter for building a mark that resists removal: tight tiling over content at moderate opacity is the pattern removers struggle with, and the controls here let you build exactly that.

The price of the depth is setup time; expect your first production template to take a careful half hour.

  3. Fully offline, and the sync that does not exist

Everything happens on your computer: no uploads, no account, no cloud component anywhere in the documentation. That is ideal for client work, and terminal for multi-device workflows, because templates live in local files you copy around manually.

One computer, one licence, everything local: decide whether that sentence describes your setup or disqualifies the tool.

  4. The free version: text watermarks only

The Windows free version adds text watermarks only, and it does not stamp its own mark on your exports: what you make is yours to publish. Image or logo watermarks, and the video queue, need a paid licence.

That is a more useful free tier than a trial mark: a plain text watermark on a small set is real output, and the licence unlocks the rest when you need it.

Star Watermark pricing, free version and lifetime licence

Prices read off star-watermark.com on 24 August 2026. The Mac edition is sold separately.

Star Watermark plans compared
Plan Price What it unlocks
Free $0 forever Text watermarks only, no added mark, Windows edition
Monthly $2.99 per month All watermark types, batch queue, video
Annual $9.99 per year Same access, less than four months of monthly
Lifetime Our pick $19.95 one-time Everything, paid once, no renewal

What the free Star Watermark version gives you

Text watermarks on images, with no trial mark added to the output, on the Windows edition. That is enough to brand a small set with your name or site and confirm the queue fits your work before paying.

Logo watermarks and video need a licence; for a browser alternative on the protection side, Watermarkly is the deeper photo batcher, though its free version adds its own logo to every export.

Monthly, annual or the $19.95 lifetime licence

The lifetime licence at $19.95 is the obvious buy: it costs less than seven months of the $2.99 monthly plan or two years of the $9.99 annual one, and it is the only one-off-priced video watermarking in our ratings. Anyone publishing clips should take it.

The licence is perpetual with no renewal, and it covers one platform: the Mac edition is sold separately. Against any subscription in this space, break-even arrives within the first year.

Star Watermark pros and cons

  • A one-off licence instead of a subscription
  • Watermarks video and images from the same queue
  • Fine control over tiling, rotation and blend mode
  • Windows and macOS only, sold as separate licences
  • No cloud sync or templates across machines

Star Watermark FAQ

Is Star Watermark any good?

8.5/10 on our five criteria: video and images through one batch queue, controls deep enough to build removal-resistant marks, and a $19.95 one-time licence in a market of subscriptions. The interface is dated; the feature list is not.

Is Star Watermark a one-time purchase?

Yes: $19.95 for the lifetime licence, perpetual with no renewal, next to a $2.99 monthly and a $9.99 annual plan. The Mac edition is a separate purchase. Against subscription tools it breaks even within months, which is why it is our value pick for protection work.

Can Star Watermark watermark videos?

Yes, on any paid plan, and through the same batch queue as images, which nothing else in this comparison offers. The documentation covers position and opacity per output resolution; the free version does not include the video queue.

Does Star Watermark upload my files?

No, it is a fully offline desktop application for Windows and macOS: no account, no cloud component, and nothing in the documentation that sends files anywhere. Files under NDA never leave the computer.

Does the free Star Watermark version add its own watermark?

No. The Windows free version limits you to text watermarks, but it does not stamp a trial mark on your exports. If an export shows a mark you did not set, check the template for a second text layer or a tiling pattern you did not intend; the paid licence changes what you can add, not what gets added for you.

Star Watermark or Watermarkly?

Watermarkly for browser convenience, shareable templates and the deepest photo batches; Star Watermark for video support, full offline processing and the cheaper one-off licence. Both sell permanent access, which is rare and worth exploiting.
